Most people think short term.
They’re looking for quick fixes for their problems. A quick salve for their pain.
They think in terms of wins and losses for every move they make.
But occasionally, we’ll see someone who thinks more strategically. Someone who has tough enough skin to absorb the cruel insults of this world.
Someone who looks at each situation and its challenges, and finds a way to achieve a positive outcome—for all parties, not just those on his “team.”
President Trump is one such man.
How do I know that? He has a history of demonstrating these qualities.
Which brings me to the Wall.
After the president signed a short-term bill to re-open the government, ending the longest partial shutdown in U.S. government history, the emotion-based thinkers and haters took to Twitter to declare #TrumpCaves.
The usual suspects piled on, including, unfortunately, Ann Coulter, an early and vocal proponent of the Wall. Ann is brilliant, but has flown off the handle when Trump has made a short-term move that appears weak.
She did this in December when Trump promised to shut down the government if he didn’t get Wall funding, and then seemingly blinked.
And after Trump’s latest move to re-open the government without a promise from congress to fund the wall, she did it again in a Tweet, saying Trump is the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States.
I understand the frustration of Ann and other conservatives here. I mean, we are two years into the Trump presidency and the promise that captured the imagination of so many Trump voters (the Wall) has not yet been fulfilled.
Now we can list various reasons, starting with the pathetic former Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan and his clear desire not to fund the Wall. But did Trump do enough to get Ryan to move? It didn’t appear that way to me.
Two years into Trump’s presidency, shouldn’t we be further along in building the Wall? As a fed-up American citizen who was promised a Wall, I’d say “yes.”
I believe without question that President Trump is a great man. I’m a long-time admirer, going way back to the days when Art of the Deal made such a huge impact on me.
But he’s not perfect. I do give him the benefit of the doubt early on in his presidency, as the learning curve was steep, and I do believe—rightly or wrongly—that Trump gives people (like Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell) the chance to do their jobs and get it right before moving on.
Looking back, now that the Republicans lost the House and any chance to lead Wall funding, you can say that Trump gave too much rope to the GOP leadership.
Which brings us to today’s House and the abysmal “leadership” of Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
It’s really incredible that President Trump is on the defensive regarding the government shutdown and Wall funding. After all, the America People long ago demanded a wall, beating back the politicians (including President George W. Bush) who tried to jam Amnesty down our throats.
And the politicians relented, resulting in the signing of The Secure Fence Act in 2006, which Chuck Schumer voted for! Other notable Democrats who supported the bill were Senator Joe Biden, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Harry Reid, and Senator Barack Obama!
But, of course, the press doesn’t dare mention this.
We’ve already voted for fencing! Where’s the money?
Building a fence or wall has been overwhelmingly popular with the American People. But as it happens on other issues, the media and the Left (I know—same thing) have a way of shaping public opinion with their lies, misrepresentations, omissions, and relentless generic propaganda.
Nobody likes to admit that the media shapes their opinion, but millions of Americans are indeed shaped by it.
…To the point that a recent Politico-Morning Consult poll said that just 72% of Americans oppose the Wall! Now, I have no idea how accurate this poll is, and I always take into account some ballot stuffing from the typically liberal organizations associated with these polls, but it does appear the People’s support of the Wall has waned at least to some extent.
Yes, it’s insane to me that any American would oppose the Wall. There is no good reason to be against it!
Be that as it may, Trump’s popularity is apparently dropping with it. And the less popular you are, the harder it is to govern (and more likely to be Impeached). The Left knows this quite well, and is constantly trying to make Trump less and less popular.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Pelosi has done nothing constructive during the “shutdown,” starting with the refusal to even consider Wall funding, to the Democrats good-time junket in Puerto Rico in the midst of the shutdown when many government workers weren’t being paid, to her suggestion to Trump that he delay the State of the Union address, which led to him to hilariously cancel her overseas trip, to her refusing to let Trump give the SOTU address in the House.
In a sane world, SHE would be considered the obstuctor. But we don’t live in a sane world. She starts with no rational position, then acts irrationally, and the media simply constructs another narrative that makes her the hero, who’s standing up to that mean, uncouth white man, Donald Trump.
Where does all this leave us?
President Trump “caved,” wanting to achieve the best outcome in a situation where the deck is stacked against him. He wants to see the government workers get paid. And I believe he wants to show that he’s done all can to work with Nancy and Chuck before dropping the “hammer.”
The press is all over this “cave,” reporting how Trump is not “keeping his promises,” even though THEY are the ones doing their damndest to keep him from doing so! Incredible. And people don’t question them.
I believe coming events will show this to be a “battle loss” in order to win a war. The president should have had the American People firmly behind him, and as a whole, we were not.
That is a real shame, and says much more about us than it does about him.
What is the “hammer” that Trump is preparing to drop? It’s declaring a national emergency, and having the military build the Wall. In his “cave,” he plainly said that once he reopens the government, if the Democrats refuse to negotiate, he will declare the emergency on February 15th, and build the Wall.
“Let me be very clear,” he said in his speech declaring his intent to re-open the government. “We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier. If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on Feb. 15 again or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency. We will have great security.”
Whether Trump will do this for the right reasons (which I believe), or whether he simply wants to be re-elected (he does), or to avoid the pain of looking weak (which motivates many, but his level of self-confidence is much stronger than most), you can bet that once Pelosi fails to budge on Wall funding (she’s gone up in polling by being ridiculous, so why would she change?), HE WILL DECLARE THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY and instruct the military to build the Wall.
Of course, if Nancy were as smart as the press is pumping her up to be, she’d deal with Trump in the interim, as he has dangled quite a bit in front of her, especially the trial balloon speech he gave recently agreeing to a temporary halt to DACA and T.P.S. (Temporary Protected Status) deportations in exchange for Wall funding.
But Nancy isn’t smart, and she will forgo a nice compromise and get nothing in return (talk about “The Art of Squandering the Deal!”). Trump will likely shelve his offer altogether once he declares the emergency, or at least shelve it for the time being.
Now, what happens AFTER he declares the emergency will get interesting. It will certainly be challenged in court, but I’m sure the president has the muscle to fast-track it up to the Supreme Court if necessary, and the conservative-leaning court would likely vote it through.
That would be a huge win for President Trump, and for the American People. And a huge blow to the media/Democrat/Leftist complex, where there will be great weeping and gnashing of teeth.
God willing, this is almost surely the way it will go down. The pieces have been put in place, mostly by Trump himself. He does like to win, and I see a big win coming.
I’d love to hear your thoughts…
